Strawberry Shortcake 7

2 cups of sifted flour
1/2 teaspoon of soda
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1/3 cup of shortening
3/4 cup of buttermilk
About 2 quarts of fresh strawberries

Sift flour once, measure. Add baking soda and salt; sift again. Cut in shortening with pastry blender. Add enough milk to form a soft dough. Spread 1/2 of dough in 8 inch layer pan. Brush with melted butter. Then place the other half of dough on top of the first half. Pat down evenly. Brush with melted butter. Bake in hot oven (500ºF. ) 20 minutes. Split short cake. Spread with butter and put berries between and on top of layers.
