Stewed Chicken & Dumplings

4 pounds of stewing hen or large
3 cups of sifted flour
1 teaspoon of salt
2 teaspoons of baking powder
1/2 cup of shortening
1 cup of milk

Cut chicken into serving pieces and place in large kettle with salted water to cover. Cover and bring to boil, then reduce flame to simmer and cook until tender. While chicken is cooking combine flour, salt baking powder. With pastry blender, fork or two knives, cut in shortening. Add milk, mixing well. Turn out onto lightly floured board or pastry cloth and knead lightly. Roll out to 1/8" thick. Cut into strips. When chicken is tender, drop strips into kettle. Cover and continue simmering 20 minutes.
